On The Road Again......

If the dictionary had a term for "freeway-itis" I believe that the definition would read something like "The overwhelming urge that comes over a person when they are driving on the freeway. The urge causes them to grip the steering wheel in a powerful grip, causing stiff, painful fingers."

Oh yeah, I have it. For some strange reason, whenever I get on the freeway in heavy traffic, I find myself grabbing the steering wheel in a death-grip, as if my very life depended on it.

Granted, when driving anywhere, your very life may depend on your driving (or someone else's) but I don't know that everyone grips their steering wheel like I do.

This usually happens on a long trip, driving in busy traffic, on an unfamiliar freeway. I suddenly find myself holding onto that steering wheel for dear life, fingers clenched in a grip so tight that my fingers actually can ache.

Sometimes I even find myself leaning forward, peering over the steering wheel, as opposed to relaxing back against the seat.

Seriously, would you want to drive with me or would it make you nervous? I honestly don't mind driving, but when I get in busy traffic in an area I am not familiar with......look out and be thankful I am not grabbing your arm as tightly as I am grabbing the wheel.

You would need to visit a chiropractor after I was done with you. Or, at the very least, a bone specialist. Bone crunching, I say. Oh, and don't talk to me when I'm driving in an unfamiliar area either, please, unless you want to get lost.

One time I was in an unfamiliar area of town and wound up going the wrong way on a one way street. And I just thought those construction workers were waving at us because they were friendly! Seriously, I need to concentrate.

Do I even need to explain what happens if it's dark outside, I'm on the freeway and a thundershower or snowstorm is thrown into the mix? Don't go there.

However, you'll be happy to know you are safe with me anytime I am driving in an area that I know really well......unless of course I'm tired, sad, mad, glad, happy, sneezing, coughing..........

  5. I don't like driving in big city traffic, like Dallas, Little Rock and Houston. But the worst is road construction!!

  6. Nan, I'm the same way. I mean really! How can anyone relax when they're in unfamiliar territory and just inches away from Speedy Gonzalez racing by?!!! Don't you just hate those one way roads. As if getting from point A to point B in one piece wasn't hard enough already. Funny story, Nan, but I'm sure it wasn't funny you and your passengers at the time.

  7. You are too funny! I guess that is why they invented grab bars on the passenger side and for the back seat! I love to drive, so much so that for one of my jobs I was a courier for a graphics company. It was the best job ever. Imagine being in the summer in California and heading down to the beach with the windows down because it's your job.

  10. I do the same thing with gripping the steering wheel. I was driving on the WV Turnpike this weekend. I'm surprised I didn't snap that steering wheel in half!

    Stay safe...lol

  11. I do the same thing...why is that? The few times I take over the driving on a road trip (VERY few times) my husband is always telling me to relax and then I realize my hands and wrists are aching from the deathgrip I have on the wheel...even if I don't actually "feel" tense. Weird. Great to hear I'm not the only one though!
