I. Hate. Math.

I.

Hate.

Math.

Specifically.

Geometry.

Thank you.

Oh my goodness, I feel so much better now!!!!!

One of the "perks" of homeschooling your children is being able to teach them useless information and then wonder if they'll ever use it someday. One of the other "perks" is having to seriously answer their "Will I ever use this?" question with a straight face and an enthusiastic "Absolutely."

Now, everybody knows that Geometry has its place. I happen to think that its place should be down the street far away from me. I also happen to think that it's good for everybody else to know it but not something that I need to know. That's because I never liked Geometry (even though it speaks very highly of me) and now I have to teach it. Sigh.

I also know that Geometry is really necessary if........ummmm......you want to build Geome trees or something....... Because you can never have to many......ummmmmm......Geome's. Ya know?

What is it good for? Seriously. You can't cook it. You can't eat it. You can't wear it. You can't drive it. What's it good for? Anybody? Hello?

The other thing is that there are people out there that actually understand Math. They love Math. They think it's fun. Fun!!!!!! And how my children can get A's in it is beyond me. But that's good. Maybe they can teach me.

Join with me now. Come on, don't be shy. I'll even help you out. Take a deep breathe and say "I hate ___________ (fill in the blank)."

There, don't you feel better now? You're welcome!

By the way, this post is purely for fun. I don't really hate Geometry. In fact, just yesterday we were sitting together having a wonderful time. We talked and laughed and shared old memories. It was really quite nice. We'll have to do it again sometime.

  1. I am a homeschooling mom who totally agrees with you. My fifteen year old is going through alegebra. I still have no idea how I got through it. All I learned was that x=5. It's a tried and true formula that has worked for me all my life. I don't know why he thinks it won't help him!

  3. I love Math! LOL. There I said it. I did hate English though in High School which probably explains my writing style now! LOL
    Love you Nan.

  4. Algebra made total sense to me.....geometry did not. I am still spacially challenged. Other than packing the car for trips....I ROCK at that!

  5. Oh, and while I am not a homeschooling mom, I do think that there are things that I need to make sure my children learn, that they won't get from their public school education.

Things they need to know about New Jersey: Jon Bon Jovi and Jimmy Hoffa

Things they need to know about Seattle: Rain, Coffee, Grunge.

  6. Me + Geometry = Crabbiness and stomping and gnashing of teeth. That's my math problem for the day. Do you need "proof" - ha ha, math humor.

  7. I am not a big math fan of any sort!

  8. I hated Geometry. I remembered having a pink slip (a notice sent to the parents) about geometry because I was getting c's in geometry when I was in High School. I usually got a's or high b's and c was out of the norm. I know I just had a hard time seeing three dimensionally. One of my sisters is an artist and I think because of that she understood it better than I did.
I went on to run a financial dept for quite a number of years.

  9. I enjoy business math...bookkeeping, accounting, etc., but I never understood geometry. Sorry, geometry...nothing personal!

  10. I also HATE Math. I mean I might not hate it so much if I was good at it...but I am NOT. I stink. I can barely do 3rd grade math with my son. Pathetic I tell you...of course, I just smile at him and say Daddy loves math..can you go find him?

  11. I could have yelled it from the rooftops when I was in 10th grade and I would yell it from the rooftops today. We just don't get along...it's nothing personal, but geometry doesn't like me either. It's a mutal thing...so I don't feel so bad!

  12. Math was never my favorite subject either. I am a little worried about when my kiddos more past counting pennies into the harder stuff like geometry!!

  14. I am also a homeschooling mom and I'm not looking forward to when I will have to teach that useless information to my children. Thank goodness my oldest is only in fifth grade and we haven't quite gotten there yet. whew!

  15. I know exactly how you feel! I hate math! It doesn't matter what kind it is! We just don't get along!

  16. Me Too! Being that I went back to school I was horrified when they asked me to take a math placement test! After being out of school for 10 years ! Yikes! My chances for doing well was close slim!

  17. I love algebra. But I hate geometry. Too many formulas to memorize. AaAAaachchhhhh!!!!

  18. I don't hate all math. But I cannot do the backwards math...subtraction, division... I can't back up a car either. Is there geometry involved in backing up a car? If so, then I hate geometry.

  19. I think I did ok in geometry...I really don't remember. I know I hate trying to help Ashton with her algebra-they do lots of things differently than we did and when I try to show her how I know to do it, she gets confused! VERY frustrating. But the fact that your kids are getting A's means you must be doing it right whether you like it or not!! :)

  20. Nan,

I agree with you that math basics should be all that is required of our children to learn unless they want to master a career in something where advanced math such as Algebra, Trig and Geometry are provided as options. It would help kids to get through those requirements much easier and honestly there are those kids that love math and the language it speaks alone! Mine are not those kids!

  23. I always thought there was no use for math too, until...

Last week my husband needed to know what percentage something was. An old trick came to mind that I learned in school - is/of. What percent IS something OF something. I quickly taught him that formula, and we both sat there in shock to know that some of this stuff actually sticks with little pea brains!
